ALCONBURY TRANSFER STATION
A groundbreaking waste contract between Donarbon and Cambridgeshire County Council began on the 11th March 2008 with the opening of a new waste transfer station at Alconbury Hill. As part of the new contract, Donarbon will treat all waste not sorted for recycling from all councils across the county. The Alconbury transfer station was built to provide Huntingdonshire District Council with a local tipping point for its refuse trucks. The site also licensed to accept trade waste.

- Trade Waste: All businesses large or small have a duty of care to ensure their waste is disposed of properly. With the exception of hazardous waste Donarbon’s Alconbury site provides tipping facilities for all types of waste, whether it is green waste, soil, building rubble, general rubbish or hardcore, Alconbury can ensure minimum turnaround times and competitive tipping prices. Contact the site (see below for details) for more information about this service.
- Aggregates: At Alconbury customers can pick up a range of different materials including limestone, sands, gravels and type 1 road stone. We also offer a delivery service for local customers. Contact the site (see below for details) for more information about this service.
- PFI contract Council Waste: Household waste from Huntingdonshire District Council is delivered by council collection vehicles to the purpose built transfer building. The waste is then loaded and transported by articulated lorry to the new MBT Plant at our Waterbeach site. In addition the Council also delivers bulky waste, fly-tipped waste and street sweepings to the site. From August 2010 the District Council will deliver all kerbside collected green bin waste, which will be transported by articulated lorry to the new IVC unit at our Waterbeach site. The Council also delivers all blue bin mixed recyclable waste (which is outside the PFI contract) to the Alconbury site, for bulk transport by Donarbon to the materials recycling facility in Peterborough.
- Free soil improver: local residents can collect compost produced at Donarbon’s in-vessel composting unit free of charge from the Alconbury site, between 8am to 4 pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 12 noon Saturdays. Please note, we will not be able to provide any assistance in loading soil improver for free, whether with tools, machinery or staff. You will need to bring your own spade or shovel and sacks or a small trailer. Remember when coming to the site to collect compost that it is a working site and refuse trucks, skip lorries and other plant will be moving around the site all day, so please observe sensible safety precautions and only go the area of the site where the compost is made available.
- Asbestos Drop Off; so long as residents follow the correct procedure, householders can bring properly bagged cement bonded asbestos to the Alconbury site for deposit in the special collection skip.
