• New March Transfer Station Opens: Company [03/11/2009]
A brand new waste facility for Fenland was opened yesterday (2nd November) The new waste transfer station, in Melbourne Avenue, March, is part of a groundbreaking waste management contract between Donarbon Limited of Waterbeach, Cambridgeshire County Council and District Councils, to improve waste services across the county, and has been developed to provide Fenland District Council with a local tipping point for its three-bin waste and recycling collections. It will allow Fenland’s vehicles to tip waste in an enclosed hall rather than having to travel on to a landfill site. This, along with newly introduced round changes to improve Fenland’s refuse collection service, will make the District Council’s service more efficient and cost-effective. The new facility was opened by Councillor Geoffrey Harper, CBE, Leader of Fenland District Council and County Councillor for Forty Foot ward, and Councillor John West, Mayor of March and Councillor for March North ward for both Fenland District and Cambridgeshire County Councils. After cutting a ribbon to allow the first FDC refuse truck of the day through the entrance, Cllr. Harper said: “This new facility will really improve the efficiency of waste collections in Fenland, which is great news for local people and the environment.” Cllr. West added, “Fenland deserves a cutting edge facility like this to complement the great efforts our residents have already put into recycling and reducing their waste." Mark Davenport, Donarbon’s Managing Director, said: “We are extremely pleased to be working with both Fenland District and Cambridgeshire County Councils on this exciting new project. We look forward to promoting further recycling with the local community with the flexibility and variety of the new facilities now available.” The new waste transfer station is the latest facility forming part of the 28 year, £730 million waste contract between the County Council and Donarbon has also seen the building of a major Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) plant at Donarbon’s Waterbeach site, where rubbish from March transfer station will be taken. The MBT plant will sort rubbish from Fenland’s green bin collections along with that from the other district councils in Cambridgeshire, into recyclable and compostable materials, so that much less is sent to landfill. In addition, Fenland’s brown bin waste will be composted at a new in-vessel composting plant on the same site at Waterbeach to make a soil-improving compost that is used by local farmers. This compost will also be available for the public to collect for free at the new transfer station. |
