WASTE MANAGEMENT

Donarbon recognises the importance of, and has invested in new technology and infrastructure, to meet current and expected future demands from customers and the Government to recycle and treat waste differently, and in highly qualified staff, who understand the changing and challenging nature of waste management.

The days of simply throwing waste into bins and having it collected for disposal are long gone. Legislation setting targets for businesses to recycle, bans on a range of waste going to landfill, a tax on landfill and increased fines for illegal waste handling mean that businesses must act in a more environmentally conscious and financially viable manner when deciding what to do with their waste.

THE PRESENT

Most businesses and the public now see recycling as a responsible way of dealing with waste, to the extent that many customers require their suppliers to have environmental policies and management systems. New incinerators and landfill sites face increased opposition from all sectors of society. However, it is recognised that a range of environmental indicators are getting worse and raw materials will continue to increase in price, so more still has to be done.

Donarbon was the first company in Britain to establish a commercial sized in-vessel composting system that complies with the Animal By-Products Regulations; this allows the company to collect and compost food waste from commercial and domestic sources to ensure that there is no potential to spread animal diseases with the compost product. We are currently upgrading and expanding this system.

THE FUTURE

We are the first company in the Eastern Region to be building a state of the art Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) plant, which will be able to sort recyclable materials from mixed waste and compost the remaining organic rich material.

Donarbon, working with technology provider Andigestion, has established the country’s first ‘green hydrogen’ plant that produces pure hydrogen through the electrolysis of water, using electricity produced from landfill gas and methane gas from digested food waste.

We are investing further in our trade recycling facilities, to accept pre-sorted materials, such as timber, paper, metals, glass and plastic, or to sort a range of wastes and extract recyclables, including concrete rubble and scrap metal and timber from mixed construction and demolition waste and skip waste.

Donarbon deals with nearly a third of a million tonnes of waste a year, from councils, the private sector and our skip hire. Around half of this goes to landfill now, but within 2 years, when all our new infrastructure comes on stream a significant proportion will be recycled and composted and only a small fraction will go to landfill. And we plan to build on this success!
